The dreaded slice
Colin Cunningham PGA Professional

How to cure that dreaded slice

Regarded by many as a killer shot that offers no control to the player a “slice” is the Achilles heel of many amateur golfers.
For a right handed golfer a slice is a shot that will start left of the target and curve across the target line eventually finishing well right of target..
Now that we have established what a slice is; how do we fix it?

A slice is normally generated from the combination of the factors listed below.
1) An out to in swing path. This is where the club head cuts across the ball. (Pic 1)

2) Club face angle open (right relative to swing path). (Pic 2)

3) Poor set up with open (aiming left) shoulders and or poor ball position

In order to change this we must change the direction that the club is traveling.  Place three balls in a diagonal line with a 6 inch gap between each one.  Take the middle or target ball away and have a few practice swings feeling that the club is working from inside out. (Pic 3)
Once this feeling is understood place the ball back in the middle and try to hit it missing the other two golf balls. (Pic 4)  You should notice a different feeling coming into impact and be able to release the hands more through impact resulting in the ball flying straight and longer towards your target instead of veering off to the right.
Try this drill and stop slicing the ball start hitting longer straighter shots.
